What is Worship?

I sat last Sunday in church.
My mind was clouded with stuff that had accumulated all week.

I could not get into worship.
I glanced over and I saw a friend wiping away a tear.
I remembered what she had told me that week.

I watched a young youth leader come and sit down by her son.
The leader put his arm around the young man
and I gathered he was praying for him.

I did not want to make it obvious,
but I sort of glanced again,
and saw the mother embracing her son.
More tears, more stuff.

I walked over to my friend after church and said,
"Watching you with your son, brought worship to my heart."

We hugged.
She knew I understood.

Music is important, but worship is not just music,
it involves our entire relationship with God,
all our heart, mind, soul, and strength,
it involves all the ways in which we can respond to God,
all the ways we can praise him by what we say and do,
all the ways we can demonstrate that
God is worthy of all praise and honor and allegiance.

  2. Making the world a better place by caring for others. I think that is worship, too.

I'm so glad you shared this.

  3. Worship is about so much more than music...like you said. Worship is about being still before God...allowing Him to speak into our hearts.

Hi Marg - a very touching blog. God uses all kinds of ways to teach us, doesn't he. Lori T

  6. Yes, you articulated what so often is my mindstate in church......distracted by thinking of people around me in the pews. I would think God doesn't mind, as that's why we're here, to help and pray for each other along the pathway of life.
